I have to agree with Barbara and Jennifer. Frankly, I find the Newbery Awards perplexing. I have yet to pick a winner, and I rarely pick an honor book. I often wonder what criteria is used (besides the broad restrictions on the ALA website). Must the winner contain emotional trauma of some kind (usually a relative's death)? I would love to see a year when we youth service librarians (like members of the Academy) get to vote for the winner. What do you say? Should we approach ALA with the idea? p.s. I, too, loved Edward Tulane and was surprised it wasn't at least honored.
