I teach students. I teach teachers and staff. I teach parents. As the LIS for the
school, I take ownership of the information literacy standards that are embedded in
the other areas such as reading, language arts, writing, speaking & listening, and
technology. By ownership I mean that I ensure these standards are taught whether by
me or by the teachers in my building. Since I have a flexible schedule and meet
with grade-levels for planning, I facilitate the collaborative planning for
teaching and carry information back and forth to the teachers who provide planning
time (P.E., Art, Music) so that all the standards are taught throughout the year -
usually in a spirally format. I integrate technology into my instruction because I
am the go-to person in my building. Within my district, I chose that role because I
am good at it and the patrons at my school needed me to model how to integrate and
teach technology tools to aide learning. I read aloud and actively teach reading
ski!
 lls. I
integrate information literacy into science and social studies lessons. This week I
will teach integrated skills, but the kindergartners believe I am teaching them all
about hibernation through centers. The fourth graders believe I just taught them
about inventors, not how to use the index and cross-references in print and
multimedia. My district is preparing a new set of standards for the LIS since our
previous guide is 10 years old. Since new inventions keep coming, I continue to
re-invent myself to meet the needs of my students, teachers, and parents. I love
what we teach.
