  Dear Colleagues,
Linda Renfro, Chair of the Teacher-Librarian Division of the Arizona Library
Association, compiled a list of the comments shared at the AASL Standards
Open Forum at the Midwinter meeting. She has given me permission to share
her notes with you.

For those of you who were not there, you may be interested in reading these
comments (below) from your colleagues from around the country.

Please read the standards carefully:
http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslproftools/learningstandards/standards.htm

Consider how you will apply them in instructional partnerships with
classroom teacher colleagues - then provide the committee (and others as
Doug Johnson suggested) with your feedback.

These standards will be critical to your work and to the future of our
profession. Let your voice be heard.

Best,
Judi

Subject: "21st Century Library Learning Standards" Midwinter Discussion

If you have not had a chance to read, evaluate, and comment about the 2nd
draft of the "21st Century Library Learning Standards", please do so on or
before 1 February 2007. Here is the link for the draft:

andards-DRAFT2.pdf
_____

There was a discussion group at ALA Midwinter on Friday. If I can read my
notes, here are some of the comments that were made in no particular order:
1. No mention of "Bloom's Taxonomy": synthesis, analysis, evaluation,
application.
2. Align with classroom standards
3. Standards have to be directions
4. Use vocabulary of reading comprehension standards: determining main
ideas, organizing information (notemaking), synthesizing,
assessing/activating/building background knowledge, questioning, inferring
and predicting
5. Language need to be aligned
6. Language needs to be simple and with minimal jargon
7. Needs a critical thinking and emotional component
8. Students contribution to the greater community with knowledge
9. Vocabulary - why is this important - who are we marketing too -
vocabulary related to all! Use plain English
10. Make a useable document
11. "Internalize" the process
12. Missouri's Learning standards align with information technology
standards
13. Concern over lack of word "library" in this document
14. Align with state standards
15. Match language in state learning standards
16. Define "21st Century Library Learning Standards" (Information
Literacy Standards)
17. Need Self Assessment= analysis - formative and summative
18. Remove word "Dispositions" and replace with "attitudes" or
"behaviors"
19. In standard II, need to have "Identify key words and phrases"
20. In standard IV, Integrate intellectual freedom; make the standards
personal for the students to be life long learners - foster wonder and
imagination
21. Everything revolves around standards of learning - vocabulary needs
to match classroom teachers - match current vocabulary
22. Collaborate with teachers on content standards-get most essential
literary standards - look at content standards -- talk to teachers
23. Maryland - need feed back from content areas, administrators, and
professionals
24. What is impact on teaching - what impact is expected to make on
teaching - How does this person or the program make a difference in student
learning
25. Literacy (secondary level) reading comprehension and keywords need
to be added
26. Define end user
27. Marketing - "What is the bottom line" - why do we need to be there -
job preservation
28. How are we going to keep it going? Quoting own standards as you go
forward.
29. MAKE IT STICK
30. Instead of "literacy", use "fluency" and/or "adaptability"
31. Be clear to learners and colleagues
32. "Literate" means that the students "can do it"; "Fluid" would mean
that the students are "at ease"
33. Not all students are "College Bound"
34. There needs to be consistency - a core level
35. Standards for students are at a minimal level - address the normal -
do what is best for the people we are serving.
