Hello LM_NET! Applications are now being sought for the 2007-2008 ALA Emerging Leaders program, and ALSC has again agreed to sponsor an Emerging Leader. This means that we provide $1000 to defray expenses to attend ALA Midwinter 2008 in Philadelphia and ALA Annual 2008 in Anaheim ($500 per conference). The Emerging Leaders initiative is designed to identify and train future leaders in ALA/ALSC, and we hope you'll be interested in applying or encouraging candidates at your libraries to apply. To be eligible, applicants must be: 1) An ALA (and ALSC, to be sponsored by us) member, and 2) Young (under 35 years) or new librarians of any age with fewer than 5 years post-MLS experience, and 3) Recent MLS degree from an ALA or NCATE accredited program or in an MLS program currently, and 4) Able to attend both ALA conferences and work virtually in between, and 5) Ready to commit to serve on an ALA, Division, Chapter, or Round Table committee, taskforce or workgroup upon completion of program. More information, including the 2008 application form, is available on the Emerging Leaders Wiki at http://wikis.ala.org/emergingleaders. The 2007 ALSC Emerging Leader, Roberto Zapata of the Houston Public Library, participated on a team of Leaders that analyzed the ALSC Web site using a member survey. This group provided incredibly valuable feedback and concrete suggestions for improving the Web site that we plan to implement this summer. Roberto will cap off his Emerging Leader experience by serving on the 2008 Caldecott Selection Committee, and a fellow member of his team, Jennifer Pickle, has been invited to serve as ALSC's representative to the ALA Website Advisory Committee. As you can see, this program translates into REAL results for ALSC and REAL experience for participating Leaders! We hope you'll be interested in applying, and/or encouraging your colleagues to do so. --Diane Diane Foote Executive Director, ALSC 50 E.
