I just posted a note about the recent call for young authors and
illustrators on my blog (see link below). If you go to the URL for
submission guidelines, there are links to frequently asked questions,
which I excerpt here for your consideration:

> Does Launch Pad charge a fee or require its contributors to take
> out a subscription to publish in the magazine?
>
> Answer: No. Launch Pad does not charge its young authors or
> illustrators (or their parents) any type of publication fee. In
> fact, contributors will each receive a free one year subscription
> to the magazine, a free Launch Pad T-shirt, a bookmark, and a
> letter of commendation written to their school principal, favorite
> teacher, librarian, clergy, or other individual.
>
> What are my chances of getting accepted for publication in Launch Pad?
>
> Answer: Because Launch Pad is a new magazine and we have just
> started to review submissions, your chances are very good! We are
> looking for both young authors and artists, so submit your work!
>
> Is there a deadline for submitting work to Launch Pad?
>
> Answer: We will continue to review and accept work until enough
> material is received for the first six issues (probably in November/
> December 2007). But don't wait! Submit your work as soon as you
> think it is ready for us to review!
>
> How long can my story be?
>
> Answer: We can consider submissions up to 2500 words in length. Due
> to space and audience considerations, most of our published works
> will be 2000 words or less. We do not have a minimum word
> requirement for submissions.

What is great about this is that there is no fee and if your
student's work is accepted, they will get a one year subscription to
the magazine among other things. It really sounds like a great
opportunity for the ages 6-12 kids to get creative and get published--
and perhaps could be a tie-in to a library-sponsored writing club.
Just brainstorming.

Here is my blog post:
