My daughter and I were a Books-A-Million with hundreds of others waiting in
line for our copies at midnight on Friday. At three minutes until time, they
made an announcement and the room, which was packed, fell silent. At
12:01, when the first book was presented, the entire room broke into applause and
everyone cheered! All for a book! And what a book! I finished my book
around 8:00 Sunday evening. I have to wonder how long it will be before we ever
see this sort of phenomenon occur over a book again--especially a
"children's" book. In 29 years as a librarian, I've never seen so much
excitement, so
much delight, over a book. And I was just as excited as everyone else. No, I
was more excited, because I'm a librarian. We, as librarians, have always
known the beauty, the wonder, and the delight inside the covers of books. It
was just such a thrill to see so many others share that same sense of
wonder. I will always believe that the true magic of Harry Potter is the way J. K.
Rowling worked the transfiguration spell that turned so many of our students
into avid readers.
