This is a great topic to discuss. I have joined social networks - I have a MySpace page, Friendster, etc. For those, I generally keep my city name and personal details (particularly about my children) off my profile. My friends on there know who I am and I have my settings set where someone has to know my full name to add me as a friend. For my blog, I'm also a little more vague. I just say that I'm in Southern California and that I'm an independent school librarian. The things I may post don't have anything to do with the actual schools I work with, so why bother including their names? On the wiki, I'm more apt to share who I am as a professional, even though the wiki is the most public of these spaces in terms of who can view the material. I do it because I will want more colleagues to join and post material. I hedge my bets that the audience will be other professionals and not anyone trying to get personal information about me. Have you "googled" your name recently? If you post on message boards (and LM_NET), your writings will pop up on searches. A good lesson to teach kids when they are moving towards adulthood. Maybe it's hooey that colleges look at MySpace, but, a friend of mine who hires people at a publishing house does it and in fact, she turned down an applicant because of her sleazy MySpace profile. Do I include a real picture? Do I include a real name? Esp, when it comes time to join something with other professionals, I don't like to feel like I am withholding information, but I feel like a Mom saying "It's not that I don't trust you; it's the other people...." Any thoughts? What works for you?
