I'm surprised that parents get so upset by the books their children read.
As a former middle school teacher, I was thrilled when I could get my
students to read, period. It didn't matter to me if it was an article in a
skateboarding magazine or fashion advice from the latest teen rag or Charles
Dickens. The fact is that Junie B. inspires young students to read, and
hopefully that love of reading will remain with that child long after Junie
B. lies discarded and forgotten on his or her bookshelf. While the grammar
may not be perfect, the books allow children to practice the process of
reading and to build fluency, skills they can later use on grammatically
correct tomes. Don't rob kids of the fun of reading just because Junie B.
hasn't perfectly mastered the English language.
