How could I possibly have enough of a phenom. that caused the
world to stop and read a series of books? I blogged about my
experiences at midnight for the last release at
http://deepthinking.blogsome.com/2007/07/22/common-sense/ If you
weren't there, you missed a vital experience of our time. Sure, I
could have lain around waiting for the UPS truck, but I chose to
participate in our cultural phenom. instead of stay in my ivory tower.
My #1 and #2 sons are at basic training and trying to find a way
to smuggle a copy of the book in to their bays. The platoon's latest
scheme is for me to rip the covers off and paste religious books
around the outside of HPDeathlyHallows to try to smuggle it past the
drill sargents. My son let them know that most librarians (and
especially his mom) would consider it a sacrareligion to tear off a
cover of a book, and that the DS' are probably smart enough to
recognize the size of HP. Instead both sons have asked me to take the
book with me when I come to visit them. One will have some hours
around graduation to read. The other has a 36 hour pass coming up and
plans to finish the book then. I had to remind him that his
girlfriend would be there, and that we might want to visit with him,
but he reminded me that we are talking about book 7 of a series that
he has been reading for the past 10 years. We had a first printing
copy of book #1 that absolutely fell apart from 6 of us reading in
our house. All of our books are well-loved and read multiple times.
I have watched students grades 1-4 reading this book. Even if
they only finish the first four while in elementary, that's still an
amazing amount of reading. A group of about 20 have read up to the
last one before they left fourth grade. Moreover, Harry Potter
inspired the kids to talk about books. This has extended to other
series with them giving me shopping lists of books. HP let them know
they are in control of getting what they want and reading what they
want. They refuse to let the adults take over this series and take it
away from them.
Have I had enough? Never! Send me another book that the entire
world wants to read.
