LM_NET Archive

I was a latecomer to the series...not beginning until after the second book
was published. I had noticed the numerous posts on LM_NET about the HP books,
but did not read it until a colleague recommended it. I would have loved it
as a youth...and loved it as an adult. I saw the wild book releases featured
on the news...something I had never seen before. I did not attend any of the
store events myself (except for the last two)...but was amazed at the kids who
flocked to the stores to buy the books. At the release of book #6, a friend
urged my 10th-grade niece and myself to attend the release at our local Barnes
& Noble store. Could I have gotten the book just as easy from Amazon? Most
assuredly. Could I have waited until the day after and gotten it cheaper from
Wal-mart or some other store...sure. Was it a lot of standing in line and
waiting...for a book? Yes...and it was great! I would have missed the
excitement of seeing not only kids...but adults...men and women...all enthused and
anticipating the written word.

I turn 41 this year. I have never seen such hype in my lifetime over any
book. Will something like this ever happen again? I hope so...we know it can be
done. I would rather the hype be over something like this than paying big
bucks and waiting in line to see the release of a movie (they've camped outside
movie theatres for years to do this) or to get tickets to some game. It was
amazing to listen to people talk in line...some near my age...and without any
kids with them....waiting to get their hands on the book.

Like I said, I could have waited to get the book. At the time of the book
release I was about halfway through reading "HP and the Order of the Phoenix" to
compare against the movie I had recently seen. I then reread "HP and the
Half-Blood Prince" which I finished early in the morning this past Saturday and
then started reading "HP and the Deathly Hallows." I just finished it around
30 minutes ago...and while I hate to see the story conclude...it was a great
read!
