<<wonder how many of those children standing in line will actually read the book
and not
just have it in their collection as a kind of status symbol?>>

I'm sure there are a few out there. But there are far more who have read the books
with joy, and who have found a love of reading through them. I had one low reader
plow his way through the first book, reporting to me on each chapter he managed; he
had to check it out 4 times to finish it. By the time he got to number 4, he was a
fluent reader, and couldn't wait for number 5. My Harry Potter books have been
worn out, replaced, and replaced again. This wouldn't happen if they were lying in
backpacks for a week.

Subject: Had enough of Harry Potter?

Is anyone else here as happy as I am that this is the last of the Harry Potter
books? To see children lined up at midnight to get their Potter book to me is
sisturbing. Why? Because I think they are victims of the Potter Media Machine that
has turned this book into a "must have" or you're not cool thing. I think that
children are being manipulated and used by the marketing firm who markets this
book. I wonder how many of those children standing in line will actually read the
book and not just have it in their collection as a kind of status symbol?
