I am a little frightened by the positive comments about this. After taking time to cool down and reading all responses very carefully, I have not changed my mind one iota. Dewey is not perfect and there have been many attempts made to find a better system, but better people than I have failed. And sure, I do have my biographies housed in a separate section of the library and my graphic novels have their own display. But the thought of taking my 12,000 volumes and trying to reinvent the wheel with them scares me to death. I always tell the students that no, my job is NOT to be able to jump up and put my finger on each and every title in the library. My job is to know how to find the books and to teach that to them - as well as to teach when it is appropriate to use a book or an electronic resource and how to use those resources. Of course, the longer I am here, the more books I can locate easily without using my OPAC, but I do not think that is the mark of a good librarian. I guess this thread has gotten us thinking anyway.
