Colleagues: I just got in a book order from a small jobber which included a 10-volume animal set, ___ : a portrait of the animal world. Since this particular jobber doesn't offer cataloging I've got to do it myself. No big deal for most things. These books, though, have me puzzled. Only two of them show up in LC, and with some major differences. The one I've got in front of me, for example, is the Spiders book. LC says it was published by Smithmark Publishers, NY, in 1996. My copy doesn't give any location, nor is there a reference to Smithmark anywhere that I've found. The verso says c 2006 New Line Books. I'm starting to get a bit suspicious that maybe New Line Books has decided to reprint, using a foreign printing operation, some OP books from other publishers. Smithmark apparently still exists, at least a Metacrawler search turned up an address and phone number for them. Any ideas? Since it is noon in NYC now, there's no point in trying to call Smithmark right now, but maybe later I will just to see if they can shed any light on this. I've already tried to contact New Line Books, but haven't had a response from them yet. -- David Lininger, kb0zke, MS/HS librarian Hickory County R-1 Schools Urbana, MO 65767 417-993-4226 tss003 at tnp dot more dot net -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
