After preliminary discussions with the YALSA office, I've created a pair of
demonstration online social networks where any teens who are interested in
discussing the current nominated Quick Picks and Best Books for Young Adults
titles can participate in doing so. The platform we are test driving is called
a ning, which is a popular, new social networking tool. (I've previously
set one up that we are now utilizing and evaluating at San Jose State as part
of an online YA class.) Within the nings, teens can discuss their reactions
in forums that are set up for each nominated book. Teens can also post
videos of themselves discussing the nominated books. They can also create their
own pages and can form groups. There are instructions on the site for
creating titles for the videos so that they can be organized for easy access.

For any of you not familiar with these committees, the Best Books for Young
Adults committee is charged with creating an annual list of new books that
are recommended reading for 12-18 year olds. The Quick Picks for Reluctant
Readers committee is charged with creating an annual list of new books for teens
who don't like to read. Both are committees under ALAs Young Adults Library
Services Association (YALSA).

If the demonstration is a success then YALSA can consider taking them on as
regular components of their Electronic Resources page.

The Quick Picks ning is located at _http://qpteendiscussion.ning.com/_

PS: All reader responses will be tallied for inclusion in the Knowville.org
Read a Billion books initiative.
