A Seed is Sleepy by Dianna Hutts Aston; illustrated by Sylvia Long (Chronicle, 2007). ISBN: 978-0-8118-5520-4 In a lovely companion book to An Egg is Quiet, Aston once again turns her quiet, contemplative prose to the hidden beauty of nature. Long's beautiful watercolor illustrations extend the text in colorful close-ups of plants and seeds and their inner secrets. The lead sentences for each concept are exquisitely simple and poetic: A seed is fruitful/ A seed is adventurous/ A seed is inventive. Brief passages explain the meaning behind each concept, while additional text, in a differentiated font, delves into the form and function of various seeds. The format itself makes the book useful in so many situations and for several age levels. As a book for sharing with Kindergarteners, the lead sentences and illustrations might be the perfect introduction--or a discussion-starter for older children studying plants. Teach inference with these lead sentences as well. For primary grades, the addition of the second level text will lend support to understanding of those lead sentences. Those classes fully engaged in a study of botany will want to hear all of the text on the first reading. Regardless, children will appreciate the stunning illustrations and the quiet respite from a busy world when they open the covers of this volume.
