Penguins! There's no denying that they are the "happening" birds
this year. Happily, Barner's new book will entice the youngest
readers with its bright, humorous illustrations and its lilting
rhyming text, extending their learning (plenty of basic facts about
all kinds of penguins are embedded in those lines) and supporting
efforts at independent reading: Some penguins live in icy places/and
some live in the heat./Their colors help them hide/when they fish for
fishy treats. While the small format makes this more a
one-reader-at-a-time book, a small group will enjoy a
read-aloud. Consider reading it to slightly older students
researching penguins and challenge them to add their own rhyming
verses embedding their new-found facts. [Suggested ages: 2-6]
