Current standard television sets have a width to height radio of 4:3, while hd is 16:9, the same as a movie screen. If you watch a movie that has NOT been formatted to fit the tv screen, you will see black bars at the top and bottom. I don't think our dvd players or VCRs will be rendered obsolete in 2009, but the industry will be moving in that direction. My prediction is that we will see more things in the new format, and less in the old. Some of us oldsters remember when color television was new. At first, only a few stations in the country were broadcasting in color (there were actually several competing systems then), and few sets that could receive color. Eventually, though, everyone got things worked out so that stations that were broadcasting in color could still be seen by those of us with black and white sets. Eventually, it got to the point where finding a b/w set, other than a few portables, was almost impossible. Why? Everyone wants color. Even the personal sets, those with 2" screens, are color now. -- David Lininger, kb0zke, MS/HS librarian Hickory County R-1 Schools Urbana, MO 65767 417-993-4226 tss003 at tnp dot more dot net -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
