LM_NET, It seems as though no one had a good source for MARC records for textbooks :-( My original request: Does anyone know a source for MARC records for textbooks? If not, does the group have any collective wisdom to offer about how to enter such material? The last time any LM_NETTER seems to have addressed this issue was 1999! Surely someone out there has already created records for these items?!!! Two solutions were mentioned: 1) Create your own "quick and dirty" record. 2) Contact the publisher/vendor rep for records. One thing was clear...if there was such a source, lots of folks would be interested in using it. Thanks, Andrea Hynes, Librarian Graham Elementary School 10024 204th Street East Graham WA 98338 ahynes@seanet.com Here are the responses I received: *** No, I'm sorry, I do not have a source for textbook MARC records but if you find one, please post a hit! About 4 years ago I began cataloging the textbooks for my principal (I only do the cataloging--I do not check out the textbooks, etc.--huge mess), but I couldn't find any source for them. I too checked the LM_Net archives without any luck. I just catalog them from scratch, but to be honest, it is just a "quick and dirty" job with only the basic info needed. I have had a lot of trouble even finding the basic information online and have found it is best to have the actual book in front of me while cataloging. There are some online sources of textbooks where I could type in the ISBN number to get basic info (title, author, and publisher). *** What I do is give each textbook a TXT call number and use the ENG, MTH, SSC etc. Then I just fill in the Title, ISBN, Cost, Pub., Copyright, notes (if any), and source. *** Contact your rep from the publisher. I can't remember what they told us, but they do have them. I am district textbooks custodian for district of 2000 students. I do my own cataloging. 1st author, title, publisher ISBN price of book. I add copies in block as long as the barcodes are consecutive. I could get by with title and price if I really wanted to do a brief, brief record. I don't worry about edition, because I always hunt by ISBN. I have been doing the job 7 years. *** I use Textlink from Follett and have to do "original cataloging" on each record. It is really a fill in the blanks for a quick record. There is no need for subject headings or summary statements. It does not take very long. It takes me all of about 3 minutes to catalog the text books in my program. If you really want MARC records, try the vendor or publisher. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
