University of North Texas Students Create Online Storytelling Concert Denton, TX, May 4, 2007 The Advanced Storytelling Class in the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas announced today the launch of an online storytelling concert. Creating Ripples ... Making Waves: A Storytelling Concert about Transformation presents 16 graduate student performers telling stories via digital video. Dr. Elizabeth Figa is the course professor and advisor of the Graduate Academic Certificate in Storytelling. Figa reports, “The community of storytellers emerging from the School of Library and Information Sciences program has promoted the development of storytelling programs in libraries and schools throughout Texas and the nation.” This unique concert was created completely by the students who formed committees to manage all aspects of the development. When asked about the relevance of storytelling in everyday life related to this concert, Karen McQuaid Co-Chair of the Promotions Committee noted, “Literacy through the reading and telling stories is firmly ensconced in libraries, schools, families as well as in the news and popular culture. Storytelling is everywhere! This event is an opportunity to bring a real storytelling concert to a wider audience via the Internet.” While the concert is suitable for a general audience, teens and adults are likely to appreciate it more. “Storytelling does not end in childhood,” according to Dawn Seymour, Co-Chair of the Promotion Committee. “Teens and adults benefit from hearing stories for entertainment but also to help in understanding the world and contextualizing relationships. The Chair of the Website Development Committee, Karen Shiver, described the class process. “Working together to select a theme, rehearse and record our stories, and design and develop the content for the website was truly a coordinated effort. Our storytelling coaches Bradley Debrick and Kim Moore and video developer/producer, Pok Chin, were essential in making this concert possible.” Marie Wolffe, Chair of the Program Committee notes, “The program planning resulted in a concert with a lot of variety including historical stories, personal and modern tales, and timeless narratives as well as a work of poetry and an entire section of inspirational quotes related to our theme.” “Take a coffee break and watch a story today!” advises Melodie Franklin, member of the Promotion and Emcee Committees. “The concert promises to be a wonderful place to spend a few minutes to escape from the everyday grind and travel with these enthusiastic storytellers as they make waves in the virtual world.” Some value-added aspects of the concert include a description and age rating for each story, biographies of each student, and the opportunity to see real performers tell their favorite story to “create ripples and make waves.” April Johnson, Chair of the Emcee Committee, welcomes and encourages listeners of all ages to attend the online concert.
