Thanks again to everyone who responded to this target. Mostly I got sent files as attachments, which was great. If you would like the attachments, please e-mail me off-list and I'll get them to you. Original post: O Collective Brain, I have a teacher who needs help. He is a social studies teacher who has, for some reason, been hired to teach English/Language Arts, so he's struggling to get acclimated. Right now, we would love to know if any of you have good activities or lesson plans for using reference tools such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, and atlases. Activities using magazines, newspapers, online databases, etc. would also be appreciated. TIA Responses: Not with newspapers, etc, but If he's looking for 'reading comprehenion' ideas I've got some things on my site that have been valuable in "gotta invent on the fly" situations. ( www.resourceroom.net - click on 'comprehension') I have found I have to tailor my reference activities to those items that I have in my library--the databases we subscribe to, the atlases we have, etc. I've attached one such item I did in collaboration with a teacher who was using Watson's Go to Birmingham in class. I've also attached a website evaluation doc. Kathy Shrock's page should have some good items. Finally,, could you please post a hit? Thank you.
