I un-cataloged all my professional library and put the materials on a
bookshelf in the staff room with an "honor" sticker on it - "borrow
it and return it". I felt like all those great books were just
growing old on the library shelves - no one ever came to see them,
even after I book talked them and circulated them within departments.
This seems to work well - I notice that some are gone for awhile...so
maybe it's working!

Wouldn't it be nice to walk in on a teacher reading? From what I can

our teachers do not read much. Most Language Arts teachers do not

Plus, I love to see more reading of the professional literature we
have in
the library. Teachers don't check out professional books unless the
principal specifically tells them to read a certain book after an
observation.

The only way someone can be effective in a school setting is to know the
collection. The only way to know the collection is to read some of
it. like
Allen, I read 1-2 hours a day, and to the teachers and others who
make rude
comments, when I see them during their prep period doing something
personal
on the library computers, I offer them a job previewing some books
for their
next projects.
