Is anyone aware of a study showing the value of information found in
books vs. online information? I am totally convinced that there is
context gotten from books that is missing from the cut-and-paste
research that is done online (both web and database). Not to mention the
vast amount of information that is contained in books but not yet
(probably never) digitized. I am not an "old-fashioned" librarian...I
see the value of new technologies, especially with students, and am not
afraid to use them...but the devaluing of books and book literacy in my
school is troublesome. In my opinion, teens should be encouraged to read
both online and print resources & to interpret/use information in a
number of ways.

I would love to have some statistics on how much information is not
available online because there simply aren't the resources to digitize
every important book (mainly, I would think, we'd be losing our history
by losing our books) and some research done on the way that users
process print information vs. online information.

If you don't know of any research but have an opinion on the matter,
please let me know. Our library is in danger of losing its books and I'm
concerned about the message that sends to our next generation...most of
whom seem to think that the top result from Google is the best source of
information on any given subject...and of the greater danger to our
society as we potentially throw away our own history.

Thanks so much!!
