Dear Colleagues, Thanks one and all for these suggestions. I'm terribly embarrassed not to have remembered LUCKY! Lots of other good suggestions here as well. Toni The Higher Power of Lucky (x4) Across the Western Sea by Avi might work. The kids travel to by themselves. They aren't left behind, but trying to get to dad. Hope was Here is a good one. I can't think of the author at the moment. While the father doesn't abandon the family, the mother and daughter in Missing 'Gator of Gumbo Limbo (by George) flee an abusive father. Ostrich eye, by Cooley. It's about a girl living with mom and stepfather who is sure her dad will return. One that I would recommend is Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Munoz Ryan. (x2) This is a really great book and is perfect for a strong reading 5th grader! Greetings from Planet Earth by Barbara Kerley is one of my new favorites. In 1977, as twelve-year-old Theo struggles with a science class project on space exploration, questions emerge about why his father never returned from Vietnam and why Theo's mother has been keeping secrets for many years. For much of the book it seems that the father is MIA but that is not the case. The Friskative Dog by Susan Straight Take care of my girl: a novel by Patricia Hermes Leaving Emma by Nancy S. Brokaw (Her father goes to Turkey for 5 months) Marisol and Magdalena: the sound of our sisterhood by Veronica Chambers Some frog! by Eve Bunting (Boy as main character) Bella at Midnight by Diane Stanley Middle Ages Cinderella-like but the girl saves her prince and becomes a heroine to the kingdom. Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary A friend at midnight by Caroline Cooney Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff Abandoned by Dad books? Don't miss How to Steal a Dog by Barbara O'Connor. It's fab. One of my faves of the year.
