I also struggled with a 398 section that was impossible to find anything in. I
spent way to much time pulling types of books for teachers.
I created a system that works perfectly for my upper -elementary library:398.2 Folk
tales that do not fit any other category. arragenged by author
398.22 Fairytales - arranged by tale (all cinderella versions are 398.22 Can
etc.)
398.23 Fables- arranged by author
398.24 Porquoi tales- arranged by author
398.25 Tall tales - arranged by tale
398.26 Magical creatures such as mermaids, unicorns, dragons etc. this has a become
a very popular section
398.27 Legend- arranged by legend
298.28 Native American religion and legend (this makes me feel better about not
calling Native stories legends) I put book in this section even if they meet
another category such as a fable. These books get a lot of use due to the
curriculum.
I made the shift a couple of years ago and have been thrilled with the increased
usage of the section and how it saves me time.
I realize that the departure from Dewey is not for everyone- but it works for me
and my library users.
