Hello, folks. I really appreciate all the help! Thanks especially to Heidi, Jeri, Sheri, Michele, and Suzanne, who offered to send examples of various coins from other countries. Here's my original request: I'm trying to collect some real coins/currency from other nations for my students to see and hold as part of a second grade project about the nations of the world. Can anyone suggest a source for this? I have one lone English penny right now! The world of coin-collecting is completely unknown to me, so I have no idea how to go about this. I live in a small town, so local banks are unlikely to handle other currencies. I'm specifically interested in Mexico, Japan, Israel, India, Australia, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. Here are all the responses: There are all kinds of sources online. Just try Ebay and Amazon for starters. Google "foreign coin collecting" and you will get more than you want. If you have enough lead time, you could have your local bank order foreign currency. Did that several years ago before my son took a European trip and we wanted the money in advance. Or, if you are near a big airport (not sure if you are near New York City), often can get currency there. Have done that in Chicago many years ago. Perhaps ask families who have recently traveled abroad if they have any spare change? My husband travels abroad quite often and has lots of spare change... Try contacting the IMF - http://www.imf.org/external/np/cpac/index.htm or World Bank http://www.imf.org/external/np/exr/center/econed/g_matter.htm http://www.imf.org/external/np/exr/center/mm/eng/mm_cc_01.htm or World Bank -http://youthink.worldbank.org/4kids/ I've seen inexpensive money on ebay. I did a fast search there and sent you a sample of what I mean... I think there were 20 Mexican coins going for 99 cents plus shipping. I hope your school mail doesn't block an email from ebay because I sent you an actual listing so you could see what it looks like. I'm not saying you should buy THAT set, just that there are a ton of coins sold there. Yes, lots are expensive and rare ones for coin dealers, but plenty are "just money." If you are in a really small town you may not have a coin dealer there, but most likely there will be one in a slightly larger neighboring town. We don't have one in Urbana (pop. 250), but we do in Buffalo (pop. 2500). Since you aren't necessarily interested in the top quality coins, you shouldn't have to pay much, probably pretty close to exchange value. A good magazine rack will have copies of magazines like Coin World. Advertisers offer world coins and banknotes. Or check the online classified ads at http://www.coinworld.com/ -- for example: BETTER WORLD coins, 4 lb. $26, 8 lb. $50, 12 lb. $75. World silver 4 oz.
