Greetings! The American Library Association's American Library Service to Children (ALSC) division, the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) division, and the Ethnic Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) all have book grants available to institutions that demonstrate a need for materials based on the individual award criteria set forth on the Web site. ALSC's annual "Bookapalooza" program gives more than 3,000 newly published books, videos, audio books and recordings from children's trade publishers to three schools each year. The materials are primarily for children age birth through fourteen and are submitted to ALSC award and media evaluation selections committees for consideration. After each ALA Midwinter Meeting in January, these materials must be cleared out in preparation for new materials to come in--Bookapalooza! The application deadline is November 30, 2007 and to apply you must be a personal member of ALSC and ALA. For more information about Bookapalooza and the grant criteria, please visit the ALSC Web site at: http://www.ala.org/ala/alsc/awardsscholarships/bookapaloozaprogram.htm YALSA's book grant, "Great Book Giveaway Competition", involves 1,200 books for young adults (ages 12-18) that go to one lucky winner. As with Bookapalooza, these materials have all been submitted for YALSA committees to review and nominate for various awards. The application deadline is December 1, 2007 and to apply you must be a personal member of YALSA and ALA. For more information about the Great Book Giveaway Competition and the grant criteria, please visit the YALSA Web site at: http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/awardsandgrants/yalsasgreatbook.cfm The Coretta Scott King (CSK) Review Books Donation Grant was created to help build collections and bring books into the lives of children in latchkey, preschool programs, faith-based reading projects, homeless shelters, charter schools and under funded libraries. Every year, in the process of choosing the CSK Award winners and honor books, EMIERT, of the American Library Association, receives multiple copies of approximately 300 books by African American authors and illustrators. Once the award is chosen, these review copies must be removed to make room for the next year's nominees. Application deadline is December 1, 2007. Aside from the Laura Bush Foundation, can anyone suggest some possible sources that I might actually have a chance with? My student population is 50% free lunch - although we aren't extremely impoverished, we also have some low reading scores. As always, your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
