To complicate things even further, didn't we have a discussion here not
too long ago about how the correct convention is to use the SINGULAR
form of the noun? The question arose over someone's query about whether
it's freshmen class or freshman class. The decision was freshman.

For example, we say
The Junior class, not the juniors class.
An Italian dinner, not an Italians dinner.

Isn't the PTA called The Parent Teacher Association? According to its
website,
it's the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
So shouldn't you be the Southwestern Teacher Association?

I'm only asking because we're having the same discussion at our school.
We're adopting a highway, and can't agree on how the sign must read.
We've all agreed Spackenkill Teacher's Association is wrong, but we
can't agree on:

Spackenkill Teacher Association
Spackenkill Teachers Association
Spackenkill Teachers' Association

I remain confused, in spite of your survey!

Subject: HIT: Proper Use of apostrophe

Thank you to the 41 people who took the time to respond to my question,
which was:

Faculty discussion over signs and proper/improper use of apostrophe:

Which is correct?

1. Southwestern Teachers Association

2. Southwestern Teachers' Association

3. Southwestern Teacher's Association

For an association comprised of 150 teachers employed by Southwestern
school district?

The overwhelming majority favored Choice # 2 because of the plural
possessive; # 1 was preferred (and actually used by many associations)
because of the simplicity of having no apostrophe for people to mess up.

Choice #3 was (obviously) not in the running. Several people listed the
OWL at Purdue, Eats, Shoots & Leaves, WilsonWeb's association file, and
other resources.

The signs in my mailbox this morning are using the second one, and when
I checked our association's print materials,that's what's on record.

Again thanks to all.

Barb
