I am looking for some "deep reads' for a 4th grade elementary boy who is reading at very high levels (actually, my son!) His teacher has been working very hard at keeping him challenged in the classroom and while brainstorming with her one day, we discussed how fabulous it would be if we could find a "book buddy" for him -- someone he could read with and then have deep discussions about the book. As it is now, he practically inhales books, but never gets an opportunity to talk about them with anyone. His teacher was able to find a book buddy for him (a 12th grade boy), which started out OK, but has since fizzled out (he's just very busy at school and isn't making the time for the book buddy thing to happen). So . . . I found a new book buddy for him -- my mother! She also is an excellent and thoughtful reader and has some time to devote to this and both of them are really looking forward to it. I am trying to come up with some possible titles for them to read. I don't think they necessarily have to be at a high level, but the real goal is for the content to be very engaging and thought-provoking, and discussable. For example, I have thought of "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, possibly some Dickens ("Tale of Two Cities" or "Oliver Twist"), "Huck Finn", possibly "The Hero and the Crown" by Robin McKinley . . . I had also considered "To Kill a Mockingbird", but because of the rape discussion, I think that needs to wait. His preferred reading is fantasy, Arthurian legend, Greek/Roman/Norse mythology, historical fiction -- but I think he'd be open to a lot of stuff. Mom's not to into the fantasy, although she did love Harry Potter! Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. I will compile whatever I get into a hit.
