My ninth grade English teacher was questioned today about the use of The Contender by Robert Lipsyte in her class. There have been two parents that question the use of alcohol and drugs by the characters in the book. The teacher has been asked to explain how the book fits with what we are teaching the students about alcohol/drug use, why it was chosen, where does it fit in the curriculum, and if the book needs to be pulled from the novels that are read at the ninth grade level. I have not yet read the book and could use any help you may have because the teacher says the kids love the book and does not want to have to pull it. I also have a copy in the library. Thank you for you help. Jennifer Neal Media Specialist Wabash, IN -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
