I usually focus on condition. I have copies of Old Yeller that are so badly
damaged you have to take it off the shelf in order to read the title. So I deleted
them and ordered new copies. I had other books that had more book tape than cover
and those had to go also. It is so hard to part with our old books, but since my
school focuses more on pleasure reading than research (don't EVEN get me started),
I try to think of cover appeal. I know that sounds shallow for a librarian to be
interested in appearances but that is the main method of selection for my junior
high students.

I have one rule and one rule only ---- curriculum. (and not just the current
curriculum). Iti s indeed a slippery slope - this discarding business.

For example, I have many titles in the 930s on ancient civilizations - none of
which has circulated since 1974. A rule of thumb might be to discard them. However,
I kept them. This week a new teacher is doing a project on river valley
civilizations - and we are using those same books daily.
Yes, of course- info on AIDS is out of date immediately - those decisions are
easy. It is the fiction - especially the classics - which become a problem. We have
all the classic novels - not used since the 1908s - until a teacher 2 years ago
decided to make them required reading - and now voila - instant success.
Basically, discarding or weeding (to give it a PC spin) is a crap shoot. You weed -
then you need.

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] Target: HS - When should a title be de-selected?

Hello,
This is my first posting on LM_NET. Does anyone have a "rule of thumb" to go by
when de-selecting non fiction titles? For example, age of the title? condition?
content? or another consideration? I recently attended a conference where I heard
there is no research to determine when a title is too old or out dated and should
be weeded. Any suggestions?

Thank you,
