Why do we have to have to call a Native American woman anything at all?
I'm a white woman and there is no term for me...well some days there is!

Dear Colleagues:

A teacher in Maine said to a Native woman, "What
can we call you Native American women if we can't
call you squaw?" That question prompted me to
write about the use of the word 'squaw' in
children's books. See the post to my blog on Monday, October 22nd.

Also this week, I wrote about a phrase... Did you
know that "The only good Indian is a dead Indian"
appears three different times in LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE?

And, with Halloween coming up, I also wrote a bit
about costumes. Below is the list of what I added
to American Indians in Children's Literature last
week. To read it all, go to my webpage at the
University of Illinois and click on "Web Page."

And please forward this email to others who work with children and
books.
