I have to jump in on the discussion of the Golden Compass. We do have all 3 books
in our library. I finished reading the series a few years ago and I have to say I
was very disappointed, especially with the last book. The story is dark, deep and
very thought provoking. And there are lots of cliff hangers and tension. But in
the true sense of a "good versus evil" story, I didn't feel there was a clear
winner or even just a good moral to the story. What was the real point to the
story?
Being raised in a Catholic household, I did feel a certain sense of illicitness to
the story. Was Lyra's Daemon really a demon, or as in Greek mythology, a "good
spirit"? It also seemed wrong that the church was evil, so I kept waiting for the
redemption part of the story. But it never happened. So the writing may be well
done and have all the right elements present for an exciting tale, but it just
didn't satisfy my sense of curiosity or of right and wrong. It is not a series I
would re-read or booktalk.
