These books are serious children's literature, and most readers knew nothing about 
them until the movie buzz began.  I truly believe we would NOT be discussing these 
issues right now if there was no movie.

protest from religous organizations. Separate from the merits of the 
books or the message you may have gleaned from them, what do you guys 
think about the fact that the uproar has begun only now that the movie 
is coming? These books are not new. Were people just unaware of 
them? Pullman did win major prizes for these books. Do conservative 
religious groups feel like they have to take a stand b/c movies get 
more publicity?

I'd love to hear what people think.
