What makes an adult book "adult"? I was at a "Publication Celebration" at the
Thurber House in Columbus last night and more than one person I spoke to made the
comment that they don't read 'adult' books.

The consensus seemed to be that young adult authors focused on plot and character
development and adult authors focused on sex.

Don't get me wrong - I love Tom Clancy and Ken Follet, think so-so of James
Patterson, and really enjoy Kathy Reichs and Patricia Cornwell. However, I'm
curious to know if the child reads "adult" books based on the quality of the
writing (and there are LOTS of YA authors just as good or better) or the quantity
of the sex.

After all, don't we all enjoy a little Janet Evanovich over Laurie Halse Anderson
some days?

  Dear LM_NETTERS:
I have a 4th grader who reads adult books and his mother is always
asking for suggestions, particularly on different series. Last year we
had him reading the Alex Rider series and the Left Behind series. The
mother wants to know if Tom Clancy or James Patterson books are
appropriate. I've never read either author, so I am at a loss.

Does anyone have any middle school selections along these lines (action
and adventure with substantial text) that would not be too explicit?

Thank you for your help,
Joyce
