I am a first-year middle school media coordinator, so to say that I still have much to learn is a HUGE understatement. I was, however, hoping to receive some input on the issue of implementing Accelerated Reader in a middle school. I know AR has had much success in elementary school settings, but I'm not certain as to its effectiveness in middle schools. I am a former middle school language arts teacher, and I can still see the faces of former students sighing with relief when they learned that our middle school did not use AR. Now I am in a school where some of the teachers are big proponents of the program and are pushing for its implementation. How many of you are in middle schools that implement AR? Do you feel it's successful at this level? I'd also love to hear any unique approaches used in 6-8 schools that generates a renewed interest in students. Or if you believe AR is NOT effective at this level, that could be helpful to know as well. Thank you!!!!! Kaye Pearce Media Coordinator Selma Middle School 1533 Hwy 301 N.
