Hi Blake

I came up with a list of websites to use mostly for educational purposes when I
taught computers at a K-8 school. Here is the link:
http://www.califonschool.org/mediacenterlinks2.htm

At that age, they should be learning:
- the basics of a keyboard (type to learn jr. program or find one online if you
don't have that software)
- mouse coordination using a drawing program (if you don't have software you can
use Microsoft Paint)
- internet basics, safety, etc. I can't remember the wesbite I used to use for this
but there are some really great sites that kids can go to in order to find out what
a webpage is, not to click on things, what an advertisement is, etc. If I think of
the website I will let you know.

Good luck!

I taught an after school elementary computer class once, and over the
course of the semester, my students created a "magazine" of sorts. For
example, we used Paint for a session or two to get familiar with it, then I
helped the kids to create a simple "board" game where a frog jumped across
lily pads to get to the other side of a pond. The kids loved drawing the
frog, and adding shapes for the lily pads. After it was printed out and
added to the magazine, the kids could get a partner, a penny and a dime (or
other game marker), and a dice, and actually play the game. We also went to
the website of the nearest zoo, and created an advertisement for the zoo by
searching for the opening time, admission cost, etc. I had a premade
advertisement where the kids just had to fill in the blanks by typing in
the specifics. I then taught them to copy and paste the Zoo logo onto the
adverstisement. At the end of the semester, I simply put all the magazine
pages between 2 pieces of construction paper and stapled them together. I
then let the kids decorate the covers, and they thought it was great. If
you have alot of students, you might need a little help until the kids get
comfortable with the computers though!

Does your school or state (via a state library system or collective purchasing)
subscribe to electronic databases?
You may want to introduce students to electronic databases appropriate to their
ages and interests. For examples: animal facts and maps.
My son at 3 and 4 loved animal facts, still does (he's now 25).
We've found that too few use the electronic library resources available.
My feeling is introduce it early and often; keep at it for their entire school
careers then perhaps parents will know too!
Libraries & librarians are about books and SO MUCH more!
Hope that helps,

Perhaps some of these sites may help
There are a variety of different ones for different
subject areas, etc.

Go to this site - they have free materials and lesson plans, categorized by grades
and then topics. I've used many of these lessons successfully.
