Dear Well-Read Ones,

My 10th grade English teachers are looking for a more exciting novel for
class study. More exciting and relevant than Lord of the Flies and A
Separate Peace, anyway. Due to a combination of circumstances, all three of
them are teaching this course for the first time and are ready to make some
changes. Last year a teacher bought her own classroom set of Life of Pi and
taught that, just because she enjoyed it herself. She's moved away. This
year's teachers don't feel as warm towards it and are looking for something
else. They are open to doing something recent and/or multicultural. They do
the plays A Raisin in the Sun and Julius Caesar as well.

I've thought about it, looked at some lists online, and searched the
archives. The best I could come up with is The Astonishing Life of Octavian
Nothing, which they are considering. What I'd really like to know from you,
though, is what novels have been successful/fun/engaging for 10th grade.
What works? It doesn't have to be brand new, and it isn't limited to
American or British authors, either.

Thanks so much for any help you can give.
