Okay...I wasn't going to jump in but I think this needs to be said. I don't think, as library media specialists, we can categorically say NO to all of our last-minute planners. It's easier to say it if they're not nice about it (as in the case that started this thread) and there are times when it is the most appropriate answer; however, sometimes it is more important to smile, tell them you will do what you can, and move on. I will admit to a little passive-agressive behavior at times with teachers like this - I may pull the books but only one or two on each topic. Then I will (very kindly) tell them how disappointed I was at not being able to give the request my full attention and skill since there was so little time to devote to it. I had a principal once under whose tutelage I learned a great deal about dealing with all kinds of people. She always said, "Kill them with kindness." Now, that didn't mean honoring every single request but it DID mean that you create no further ill will with your own anger, frustration, or negativity. She used to also say, "Give them enough rope and they'll hang themselves." Do what you can, do the best that you can, and do it in the spirit of cooperation - even if that cooperation is only one-sided. You'll be a better person in the long run - and a lot calmer! :o) susan On 4/2/08, Colette Eason <ceason@dallasisd.org> wrote: > > Behind my desk is a sigh purchased from the $1 section that states it > perfectly: > > LACK OF PLANNING ON YOUR PART, DOESN'T CONSTITUTE AN EMERGENCY ON MY > PART. > > My second year as a librarian, I said, "NO" every time someone said, > "Mrs. Eason?"!!!!!
