Hi, you've probably already gotten results, and maybe it's too late.
but for future reference, a couple that I've used are:

dogs/cats/drawing -- that is, they can search for dogs and cats, dogs or
cats, and then look for books about dogs/cats but NOT drawing books (we
always have lots of those in our library, but if the student is looking for
info about pets, rather than drawing the animals, you get the idea)

and

american/revolution/NOT industrial
our 5th graders to revolutionary war in social studies, so they should know
a bit about the topic.  little tougher to explain about industrial
revolution, I use that for 7th and 8th graders...
