Good morning all, This whole discussion reminds of the times I have been told that a person can get away with saying almost anything if the phrase "bless your/his/her heart" can somehow be included. So, "Bless your heart for asking but I am afraid I can't help you with that project today." My dad used to tell me that one could say "Darling, when I look at you time stands still." or "You've got a face that would stop a clock!" It might mean the same thing, but obviously one would be received with more enthusiasm. We can refuse an unreasonable request and still maintain a relationship if we maintain a positive approach. The sun is not shining today in Kansas. In fact, this has been one of the gloomiest winters on record. We're all ready for spring. So sorry--is there another time you can start that project??" sweetly and sincerely. And most of the time it's accepted and our relationship with the rest of the faculty remains good. It's all in the way we say it--and the way we go out of our way to help WHEN WE CAN. Have a great Thursday (the sun is actually shining here in SW New York--Spring has sprung!) A nice way to start my day. And the phone rang, and I was being asked to do someone else's job last minute, which would cause the library to be closed today. (Today is the first day the library will be open in 2 weeks, due to statewide testing.) And I was able to sweetly, sincerely, and firmly say 'I wish I could help you, but I can't today.' You know what? It was not an issue for the person asking. She didn't get huffy, didn't cry, didn't blame. Yahoo!!-- (And it's also my birthday today. No lie!)
