I agree with all you say, and pointed Jacquie in the direction of Jamie McKenzie's 
articles  on
Powerpointlessness.  http://fno.org

However, I believe the problem starts before the research process even starts, and 
that is with the
task the teacher or teacher librarian assigns.  It should be worded in such a way 
that
copy-and-paste just does not work, starting with verbs such as compare, contrast, 
analyse, justify,
evaluate and all those others that invoke higher order thinking skills.

Something that people might like to investigate is David Loertscher's work called 
Ban Those Bird

provides some
excellent templates.
