I just celebrated 2 months in my middle school (whoo hoo!). Next week, I'll be teaching a small group of 7th grade special ed. students in the library. Their teacher wants them to write a biography report, and I'm supposed to show them how to take notes, how to use the index and table of contents, etc. to look for info. She's a new teacher, so doesn't know what kind of final project she'll want to do. She was talking about a paragraph of information, using only print sources, so they don't get into the cutting & pasting thing. What I'd like to know is, I know there HAS to be something more interesting with a biography report than a paragraph filled with when they died, lived, what they did, etc. Can someone give me an idea of what kind of insightful information they should be seeking and a final project they have used to present information on a person that would be more motivating than just simple regurgitation of facts? I know they're special ed., but I'm sure they're capable of more than a paragraph of facts. BTW: I've heard of the "dress up as your person" thing, but I don't think that would fly with them. I look forward to any suggestions and advice. Thanks in advance. If anyone asks, I'll post a hit.
