Congrats, Barb!! Your approach to technology shows a great
balance---you know when to unplug!!

Kathy's comments about your software for embroidery reminds me of a
good friend of mine who in the early 1990's would not "embrace"
technology --- even at school when we were required to use email to
communicate. However, one day when I visited her at home she took me
to her sewing room (actually it was a "quilter's paradise"). She was
excited to show me her new sewing machine--- it was a "high-tech"
machine with software that would allow her to do her machine quilting.
Her passion was quilting and she was heavily involved in learning new
techniques because she also created quilts for national quilt shows,
took personal orders for speciality quilts, and even wrote articles
about quilting techniques for a local quilting guild.

When I asked why she felt so at-ease with the machine and its
software, but did not want to embrace technology at school (for
educational purposes), she realized how silly she had been. She then
told me that she felt very selfish now because she was denying her
students (and herself) from utilizing the tools that would help make
their learning easier (and fun). She came back on Monday and asked me
to show her how to use email. From that point on, she was one of our
best success stories.

Even now (as a retired teacher), she is still using technology very
effectively. The only problem is pulling her away from her high-tech
sewing and quilting machines to sit at the computer long enough to
send me an email!!
