I took classes for both an undergraduate and a graduate (MLIS) degree
in library science from two different universities in Oklahoma. In my
undergraduate program for LIS, we read at least 100 books for the
children's lit course and 50(+) chapter books for the YA course (much
like Teri spoke about). Then in my MLIS program, I was also required
to read this number of titles for each particular program (luckily,
not the same books) ---and then there were the "additional classes"
like Multicultural Librarianship where we read a lot of multicultural
literature for both groups and examined the content for stereotypes,
etc.

What I remember the most after finishing my Master's program on a
Saturday afternoon (after testing and writing all day), was waking up
on Monday morning with this uneasy feeling that I "needed to be
reading SOMETHING!" I also had the feeling that I should be writing /
researching...and this was due to the fact that if there was a moment
without noise, distraction, or work to be done, I was reading or
writing for these courses!

I think that things have become MUCH easier for many younger educators
going through their programs....I notice this especially when I share
a "contemporary classic" with a group of students only to hear their
teacher say, "I LOVE that story! Is it new?" [Well...yes,... it was
in 1984~]

(sigh)...I miss the overwhelming workload of graduate studies...*grin*
