Good Morning!

I would have to agree with writers who have said there is less of
children's literature in education programs, but I think it varies greatly
from school to school and class to class. Back in the Dark Ages when I
took my first children's lit class, we read hundreds of books from various
levels and genres. Those of us who were more interested and
over-achievers read more. Some of us were even seduced by the field and
became determined to study it in more depth. As a Ph.D student in
children's literature many years later, I was part of a 5000 level intro
to children's literature, and was amazed at what many, not all, of the
young under-grad students lacked in experience with the books. They were
children of my peers (age group) who one would have thought emphasized the
power of literature. But no, these people in early childhood brought in
Disney titles not classic versions of fairy tales, Dora and some of the
mass produced. The teacher of the class looked to her grad students to
turn discussions in small groups to literature. She had an up-hill battle
that semester and went head to head with the people in early childhood.

Point being: knowledge depends on many things. It's not just the classes,
but interest, and background.
