I am posting this for a high school need even though I'm in elementary right
now.

I need two ideas: a really good Latino-American book and a really good
Asian-American, preferably Korean, book for English 11 (regular) - -
something like Latino and Asian equivalents for A Narrative of the Life of
Frederick Douglass or Richard Wright's Black Boy. I have Amy Tan's Joy
Luck Club, but the boys aren't digging it.

If you use a MAC you can get an account from .mac.com for $99 per year.
From what I understand you get lots of server space with it.

We've had a number of Vents lately - it must be that time of year! ;)
- but please keep any venting related to our focus on important issues
for school libraries.

Also, please weigh whether responding to a Vent onlist will advance
the discussion in a meaninful way and in a way that would be of
interest to the group as a whole. Often, the best way to reply to a
Vent (with encouragement, to share a similar predicament, etc.) is
off-list to the author personally.

Subject: Target: Tech: Need recommendation for database application for
Windows

Hello all,

I must move from my macs to Windows in 2009. Right now I heavily use
Filemaker Pro (I don't use it well, but it was the best I could find) and
will find myself in need of a database application for Windows. I have not
heard good things about Access as far as it not being user friendly. I have
to admit my favorite database application was from the Microsoft Works
package that was available in the early 2000s. Can anyone recommend an
application that is easier to use than either Filemaker Pro or Access? I'd
love something online that I could access from anywhere I happen to be.

BTW, I keep my books wishlist for three different schools in one database
with priority listings, author, title, company to purchase, who requested
it, subject and level, positive reviews all listed. This is a real must for
me.

Thanks to anyone what can make a recommendation to me.

Barb

Subject: Hit: High Interest Read Aloud 4th Grade

Hi- Thanks to everyone who responded to my query about read alouds for 4th =
graders! I now have some great ideas. I plan to read a few over Spring =
Break (!) to decide which one to share. My original post is below, =
followed by the responses.

Original Post:
Hi- I'm looking for a high interest book to read to 4th grade students. =
The teacher is thinking of something along the lines of Artemis Fowl, =
which we thought might be too long as I will only see them for 15-20 =
minutes once a week. We're looking for something that will really hold =
their attention. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

____________________________
What about Holes???
_______________________________
The Boys Start the War by Naylor. Humor sometimes keeps them entertained =
better since you only read once a week.
________________________________
Artemis Fowl is great but I agree, too long.

Shredderman by Wendelin Van Draanen is really good. I used it in my 3rd
grade classroom and the kids loved it. At the time my 5th grade son loved =
it too!
__________________________________
some read alouds I enjoyed with that age group were: The Flunking Of =
Joshua T. Bates( he flunks 3rd grade, so 4th graders are his age). They =
also liked FRINDEL and I made JUNIE B. very funny, so they enjoyed her =
once in a while.
______________________________________
Hugo Cabret-- definitely!
______________________________________
The invention of Hugo Cabret : a novel in words and pictures / by Brian
Selznick. There is a great intro to the book, actually the first 40 some
odd pages, all pics, but without gutter in the way.

Montgomery, Claire and Monte. 2005. Hubert Invents the Wheel.
Illustrated by Jeff Shelly.=20

Abbott, Tony. 2006. Firegirl. New York: Little, Brown.

Haddix, Margaret Peterson. 2005. Double Identity. New York: Simon &
Schuster.=20

The BFG / [by] Roald Dahl ; illustrated by Quentin Blake. is an
excellent read with lots of made up words!
_____________________________________
The new Caldecott is amazing: The Inventions of Hugo Cabret with eye =
popping graphic novel style. I know it looks long, but I think you'd be =
ok as much of it is illustration.
_________________________________________
I have had great success in the past 8 years of reading aloud to fourth
graders Robert McCloskey's "Homer Price Stories". There are six short
stories that should fit into your time frame and they get the humor of
the sheriff at this age as well as being captivated by the incredible
artwork that is sprinkled about. I read it over the course of the year
when time allows, or you could do six weeks in a row, it's flexible like
that.
When we read the one called "The Doughnuts" I splurge and get them
munchkins for while they listen or I found that they are all hungry
after!
_______________________________________
Have you read the David Mortimore Baxter series by Karen Tayleur?
Mine are never on the shelf since I read one aloud to one class (out
of 24) and the word spread about the hilarity (and there is a
message.)
_____________________________________
I'm reading the first book in the On the Run series called Chasing the
Falconers--a real page-turner--to my 4th and 5th graders. They love =
it.=20
It's the story of 2 kids who escape from a juvie detention center to try =
to
exonerate their parents who have been unfairly imrisoned for treason.
Really good and not too long either!

Joey Pigza books

Peter and the Starcatcher series by Barry/Pearson

Coraline by Neil Gaiman is a fabulous, slightly creepy, gripping read for =
that age group! And it's not too long.

I taught 4th grade for 10 years before becoming a media specialist 2 years =
ago. My class' favorite read aloud was Running Out of Time by Margaret =
Peterson Haddix. They just hated when I stopped reading.

The previous librarian in my school read the boys "punished" just before =
she left in January. It was a real hit! She read it to 4th and 5th =
graders.

=20
Right now, I am reading "Frindle" to the third graders. It's also going =
well.

I have used the following very successfully with the
fourth graders at my school this year:
Hatchet
Freak the Mighty
No Talking

I have all the fourth graders at one time, once a week
for me to read to them.

I love THE PRINCE IN THE POND. On he long side but even better is MRS. =
FRISBY AND THE RATS OF NIMH, from Helen Dittmer

I am currently reading The meaning of smekday to the fourth graders and
they really seem to be enjoying it.=20

I have a teacher in my high school who is starting a "History through

fiction. Specifically, she needs some more titles that would be good reads

Subject: dictionary program

The fifth graders in my district are being presented with free dictionaries
sometime next week, and we ( media specialists and fifth grade teachers)
have been asked to come up with a very simple program for this presentation.
I'm thinking a cute skit about the dictionary, or some good quotes about
dictionaries, or even a readers theater/choral reading thing with
dictionaries as a theme, or something else along those lines.
But, of course, I can't come up with anything more specific. I've searched,
but any item that has dictionary in it has lessons, and not ideas for a
program.
If you have thoughts, suggestions, inspirations, please send them my way.
Thanks!

Subject: Summer Reading lists for High School in Physics and Chemistry

Our principal is mandating summer reading lists in all subject areas for
grades 9-12.I have been looking at possible choices with staff and the
negative comments were that with five books to read the books should be on
the short side.Any suggestions for interesting and short books that are in
the fields of physics and/or chemistry would be very much appreciated. I
might come back and ask for books in some of the other disciplines that are
also short and lively.
Thank you,
