I, of course, have the usual rules about paying attention, respect, book care, etc.
But, I also have one that some of you may find useful. When I first started in my
district, I had all the kids in one library which is in the high school. It is
upstairs, and also, the only way from one end of the upstairs to the other. Often
times people came into the library for one reason or another while I was having a
grade school class. Of course, any distraction to the class was a problem. So I
made the following rule. "If someone comes into the library while we are having
class, your job is to ignore them." This has really helped, and I still use the
rule although we now are in a less travelled spot in the new school. However, we
still get people who come in. The color laser printer for the whole grade school
is in the library, so we get lots of printer traffic for instance. I point out to
the kids that, whoever the "visitor" is, that they are not there to see them. If,
for some reason, a student IS needed, the person has to speak to me first, anyway,
so they just need to ignore them. It really helps me to have the rule in place, so
if situation occurs, and the kids get distracted, I can just remind them of the
rule. That usually settles them down pretty fast. Of course the time the janitor
was up in the ceiling fixing the air conditioner was a lost cause!

Decatur,IL where ADM is located. Matt Damon was in town this spring filming the
movie, and, of course, we were all talking about him, and where/who had seen him.)
