I just received an email from Scholastic Book Fairs that says they are
going to take $30 off this fall's book fair profits for a "fuel
surcharge" due to the rising cost of diesel. I will probably cancel my
scheduled book fair this fall because of this. I work in a high poverty
school and my profits are pretty slim as it is-now they're going to
knock $30 off the top? I don't think so. They're already making a
killing and don't need to make more at my school's expense.
The email goes on to say that they hope the fuel surcharge is only
temporary and they hope to reduce it when diesel prices go down. The
only way I will consider doing another book fair is if they eliminate
the surcharge altogether. Maybe if enough schools cancel Scholastic
will reconsider.
