Hello. This is an unusual query, but at my 7-8 grade middle school, some =
students are checking out the Maus books by Art Spiegelman to copy the =
swastika on the cover and use other art in the books to make art. My
asst. principal came to talk to me about it today and I said I would do =
some research and ask all of you
for suggestions about how to deal with this. I don't want to single the =
students out but also want to
think of a way for them to understand what Art Spiegelman was saying in =
the books. The students who
are borrowing the books are, I feel almost certain, not reading them, but =
using them for the art and some even believe the "Holocaust doubters." Why =
waste an opportunity to possibly open some eyes, in other words. Or by =
addressing it, am I making it too big a deal. Thanks for any thoughts.

School librarians absolutely do act "in loco parentis" (as does every schoo=
l employee). If a parent doesn't want a child to have certain books then w=
e should make an honest effort to support that parent. At least the parent=
isn't trying to ban the book from the school.

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] TAR: Teacher interference and book choices? a bit lon=
g

I am interested in what others have to say about it. I had a situation
along those lines last year.

A boy checked out a manga drawing book and pointed out a scantily dressed
cartoon female character to his classmates, causing disruption in the
class. The third grade teacher pointed it out to me and asked if I thought
it was appropriate for 3rd grade. I explained that as a parent I may or ma=
y
not feel it appropriate but that I was trained not to make those judgements
for his parents. The teacher responded that it probably would be ok with
this particular child's parent. I then added that as a teacher she had a
right to dicatate what was appropriate for her classroom and could make tha=
t
decision. To illustrate the point, I mentioned that another teacher (her
best friend in fact) could not stand Captain Underpants and would not allow
it in her classroom. The teacher in front of me then went on to defend
Captain Underpants and I pointed out to her this is why librarians don't
remove books from collections, etc.

In library school I was taught that librarians are not in loco parentis and
should not make decisions about a child's reading materials. Therefore, as
a public librarian I never interfered with a child's choice no matter what
because I was not in loco parentis.

In a school setting, I understand that the school is in loco parentis,
however, I have maintained that as a librarian I am not where as the
classroom teacher is and has the responsibility to determine what is
appropriate for her/his classroom. Some years I've been teacher prep
coverage, some years not. I have always maintained that one reason I shoul=
d
not be coverage is that it is almost a conflict of interest for me to make
book selection decisions for students where as a classroom teacher had ever=
y
right too.

The teacher's directive should come from the teacher to the student directl=
y
and you should not have to be the go between. If the teacher does not stay
with you and the child goes for books that the classroom teacher does not
want, the teacher can confiscate the book.

I will also allow students to check things out for home that teachers do no=
t
allow in their classroom as long as their parents allow them to visit the
library after school and are willing to accept that I will not interfere
with book selection choices.

BTW. I love Captain Underpants. I think he has saved many a boy (and
probably girls) from hating reading for life and I wish your parent could
understand that. In the end though she is the parent.

I got tons of great responses. Thanks so much.
Childhood memoir picture books.

HIT

Almost all of Patricia Polacco's books are memoirs.

All the Places To Love by Patricia Maclachlan

The Sea Chest by Toni Buzzeo is a story-within-a-story in which an old woma=
n remembers her life growing up on a lighthouse island and the arrival of h=
er baby sister in a sea chest.

Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory," is a wonderful story, easily availabl=
e in picture book form.

26 Fairmont Avenue by Tomie dePaola - really enjoyed this book myself

How about the Art Class by Tommie DePaola?

Patricia Polacco books such as The Trees of the Dancing Goats, Betty
Doll, etc. are from her childhood. Also One Thousand Tracings by Lita
Judge is a wonderful memoir of her family helping WWII refuges in
Europe.

Tomie dePaola has a few books -- his autobiographies are memoirs of his chi=
ldhood written as fiction books, but my favorite picture book by him is "Th=
e Art Lesson" when he tells about his struggles to create his own artistic =
style in elementary school.
