I really enjoyed Amy's Book Crossing promotion idea. I've been
wanting to do something with BC for some time. I thought I'd also
share what we're doing at my high school for Library Lovers Month. I
know it's very late in the month, but I personally love to hear
reading promotion activities. I save good ideas and come back to them
the next year. We are hosting a "Reading Brings Sweet Rewards"
promotion which is coincinding with the launch of our new student book
review website (http://hamlib.edublogs.org/) this month. Our entry
way theme promotes the site and contest and has a display case
featuring "Books We're Loving." Students who submit book reviews earn
an instant "sweet reward" (a piece of candy) and an entry into our
weekly drawing which is a $15 Barnes and Noble Gift Card (they come in
a box with four chocolates). I had a special drawing on Valentine's
Day with a gift basket. I have been receiving a lot of book reviews
although mostly from the same group of students, but the big payoff
has been in the number of students visiting the new site. I added a
FeedBurner link to our Library Home Page which updates from the book
review site displaying the most recently reviewed titles. All of the
titles have become most-wanted and our circulation is on track to
double this month. Even more exciting is just the general buzz of
excited readers. Each morning I'm immediately met with kids talking
about their books, and kids who've enjoyed books in common have been
seeking each other out and swaping personal copies (especially since
nearly all our recommended ones are checked out!). It's been a lot of
fun. I would love to hear what others are doing this month. If you'd
like to share off-list, I'll post results as a HIT. I'll be looking
for new ideas for next year...
